Meet Matt Schrader
In a fiercely competitive business that’s built on relationships, it’s no surprise that Matt Schrader has made a name for himself.
The XD Agency’s SVP of Client Development has always been a competitive guy — an All-American soccer player, no less — who has a knack for, to say the least, getting along with others. (He’s had plenty of practice outside the office, as one of six kids, a dad of four, and approaching a quarter-century of marriage.)
Matt joined The XD Agency in June of last year, where he found an agency that not only did inspiring work and espoused core values that resonated with him — clarity, purpose, boldness, and empathy — but also aligned with his self-affirmed aversion to BS.
Read on and get to know Matt in his own words.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a professional athlete. Sports has influenced everything in my life. I was an All-American soccer player in college and continue to play sports now.
What do you do exactly now?
I lead a dynamite client development and marketing team.
What’s on your desk?
Ha! That depends on the desk. My WeWork office is pretty bare, though I always have a jar for loose change. My home office is filled with family photos and the kids’ ceramic projects from when they were younger.
When people come to you for help, what are they usually looking for help with?
Most often, they’re looking for help finding new and innovative ways to provide value to our clients. Some of my new client development folks also ask for interesting or clever ways to reach out to prospects.
What is the best part of your day?
I like the early mornings. I get into the office before anyone else, and it’s peaceful and productive time.
And the worst?
Having to talk with one of my colleagues after learning that we did not win a project. It’s rare – LOL – but it’s never easy to lose!
How do you win friends and influence people?
Simply chatting with people and treating them like an old friend. Many times, executives just want to have normal, regular conversations.
What are you reading?
The Sea Wolves: A History of the Vikings. I try to read one book a month and only read non-fiction. I’m fascinated with how the Vikings explored and lived.
What’s your favorite innovation?
Well, I can first tell you that my LEAST favorite innovation is the iPhone — rather, any and all smartphones. I honestly feel that smartphones will be the downfall of communication and social compatibility. My favorite innovation: Amazon Alexa.
What do you like to do the old-fashioned way?
I still like printing things. I have a binder clip of potential prospects that goes with me everywhere.
What’s your greatest accomplishment?
My four amazing kids.
What gets you fired up?
I am fired up about growing and developing our presence in San Francisco. We’re making a concerted push to grow our business out west and have hired some terrific people to lead the charge.
What motto do you live by?
“Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive.” — Andy Grove
