A Letter of Thanks to the Agency that Hired Me
Often times, I wake up in the middle of the night because my brain is reminding me that I need to do something. Usually it is work-related. One recent night, I woke up with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude — so overwhelming that I knew it was time to write a thank you note.
If you know me, you know I love thank you notes. The bigger and grander, the better. Our society is so quick to complain about things and point out the negative. My hope is that if we all scream gratitude loudly enough, it’ll start to drown out the negativity that surrounds us. Below is my letter of gratitude to the agency that hired me.
Thank you doesn’t seem quite fitting enough of a phrase to express just how grateful I am to you. Thank you to a CEO who many years ago decided to take a leap of faith and start a company that would impact so many people, me included. Thank you for hiring wonderful people and creating a culture of passion and hard work. Thank you for buying us snacks for those long nights and coffee for those early mornings. Thank you for the cool office space we get to work in. Most importantly, thank you for being brave and following your passion to do work that is thoughtful and not just a pretty picture on a banner.
You see, I left a mediocre job to go back to school and follow my passion to be creative, not knowing what was going to be on the other side. School was hard and took a lot out of me.
You did not have to hire me or take a chance on me. With only two years of design under my belt, you could have passed me over for a better designer or for someone that had more experience, but you took a chance on me and I am so grateful. I can look back at the two years I’ve been here and see a noticeable difference in who I am as a designer and who I am as an individual. That growth has come from the way we’re set up to be able to work on so many different project and with some really awesome people.
Thank you for the performance reviews each year that are thoughtful and help me develop as a person. Thank you for believing in women and putting really bright ones in positions of leadership. Thank you for thoughtfully setting up a mission that I believe is powerful and will cause a ripple in our industry. Thank you for having values that I can stand behind and that align with my own life goals. For being diverse and accepting and for being funny and smart. Thank you for being a place that I am SO proud to work.
It’s pretty remarkable that at just two years out of school I am working at a dream job: a place that checks all the boxes and even causes me to have more boxes to check off. I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to fully express my gratitude, but what I can promise is that I’ll continue to grow and I’ll continue to work hard, because this is an agency that’s worth it. And that first showed me that I’m worth it, too.

But when Brooke shared this letter and gave us permission to share it more widely, we couldn’t resist. This holiday season, we wish you all a professional community that you love just as much.
