Meet Jack Mayfield
Today, we’d like you to meet Jack Mayfield! He’s been making The XD Agency’s Atlanta studio a great place to work since 1999. Ask anyone on our team about a time he swooped in and saved the day and you’ll be blown away by the outpouring of gratitude we all feel for this guy.
In addition to his decades-long experience in video production and motion graphics, he’s the man behind the scenes making everything in the office work smoothly. He’s the enemy of every email malfunction, computer glitch, and iPhone error.
He balances a hefty workload with Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Coca-Cola, along with handling a lot of our internal marketing work too.

Hey, Jack, what’s your story?
I am the son of Dolly Parton and Captain Kirk, or at least those are folks who my mom and dad always reminded me of. It all started when I was five years old in 1977, and my parents took me to see Star Wars in the theater seven times. (It would’ve been six, but I demanded we leave a screening of the National Velvet re-make, International Velvet, and spend the rest of that time watching Star Wars instead, which in hindsight was a wise critical decision.) Being wild for that movie and the art and processes behind it started me down the road to my career; I wanted to make or be a part of that kind of art and storytelling. Similarly, passionate later obsessions with Rod Lord’s animations in the BBC TV Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Apple computers, and SPY Magazine added new realms to my repertoire, namely graphic design, desktop publishing, and typography (Garamond 3 Italic forever!). So, I guess it’s been a life led by obsessions.
What is your favorite place in the world?
I’d say, “home,” in every permutation and meaning of the term. The apartment I live in, the houses I grew up in, the town I went to college in, the state I was born in. Finishing the job up right and getting to go home is always my work’s biggest motivator. I love defending my time at home as a strong aspect of work/life balance, and I love being home so I can control and curate my environment.
What motivates you? How do you motivate others?
The excited nervousness of a new challenge always motivates me. Each new task or project sparks something inside me that says, “How will I do this?”, and that drives me to find solutions from my own skill set, or propose alternate approaches that I know can work to meet our goals, timeframes, and budgets. I have to admit though, as I’ve grown more confident and experienced in our field, it does feel pretty nice when I can fearlessly say, “Oh yeah, I can do that.”
As far as motivating others, I’d say politeness is my primary weapon. I am a Southerner, after all.
What’s your secret superpower?
Always being able to whip out an apt quote from The Simpsons for any situation.
What song best describes your work ethic?
“Chasing Sheep is Best Left to Shepherds,” by Michael Nyman (my favorite composer’s film soundtrack piece)
I like that message of specializing, knowing my own skills and my own limitations, and getting the right tool or person for the job.
